A Study in Scarlet: A Sherlock Holmes Adventure

A study in scarlet is famously known as the first Sherlock Holmes novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The story begins by introducing the two main characters: Dr John Watson and private Investigator Sherlock Holmes who are trying to solve a murder case in Brixton.

One point, I really liked was the character development shown throughout the novel. This is done through the clever use of really detailed, descriptive backgrounds supporting the characters and explaining their decisions to the readers. Conan Doyle uses this to maintain thorough engagement and keep the reader engaged with the story.
I also really liked the plot line and thought the murder case and crime aspects were presented as intriguing focal points. The two murders both have elements that don’t add up but this only interested me more as it left a wide range of possibilities for the readers to guess about.

However I thought the non-chronological order didn't suit the book and found it very confusing. The major flashback in part two appears completely irrelevant until nearly the end of the book which is slightly discouraging.

Despite this the flashback proves to be a key feature which eventually completes the story and supports the motives of the killer so it is important to persevere.

Overall I did really enjoy the book and would definitely recommend it.

  1. A balanced review of both the good and less successful aspects of the novel. Did you watch the modern series? What did you think?
